You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

For individuals new to the subject, this qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits. The main styles and categories of spirits, the defining characteristics of the main spirits types, the production processes and vessels used in making spirits, and the key principles involved in the storage and service of spirits — as well as a standardized method for tasting spirits. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.
The Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits will be assessed by a WSET® Awards-set closed-book examination paper comprising 50 multiple-choice questions, to be completed in one hour.
All examination questions are based on the published learning outcomes and the recommended study materials contain the information required to answer these questions correctly. A candidate will be required to pass with a minimum mark of 55%.

For individuals seeking a core understanding of wines, this qualification explores the major grape varieties and important wine regions in which they are grown. You’ll learn about the styles of wines produced from these grapes as well as key classifications and labeling terminology. A basic overview of the key categories of spirits and liqueurs will also be provided. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

There are over 250 wineries in Virginia, from the rolling hills of Northern Virginia, to the valleys and hillsides of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the gentle lands of the Northern Neck and Eastern Shore. Virginia’s rich history and is also at the foundation of wine in America. Thomas Jefferson, a Founding Father, a principal author of the Declaration of independence and the 3rd President of the United States, was also the most knowledgeable wine connoisseur of his age.

Learn some of the history of the region, the art of winemaking, and how to recognize the characteristics of grapes that are well suited to the regions (Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay, Viognier, and others). Enjoy comparative tastings of wines to help you recognize the wine you prefer.
